Thieves Don't Know When to “Stop”

Thieves Don't Know When to “Stop”
FORT ST. JOHN, BC
August 18, 2010
The Fort St John RCMP are looking for the public's assistance in identifying the person(s) responsible
for rash of recent stop sign thefts. On Tuesday, August 17, 2010, City of Fort St John workers called
police to report that sometime overnight thieves stole a number of stop signs from intersections in the
area of CM Finch Elementary School. In total, 14 signs were stolen near the area between 110
Avenue and 114 Avenue along 104 Street, 108 Street and 109 Street. Today, the Fort St John
RCMP received a report that overnight another thief tried to steal a stop sign at the intersection of 112
Avenue and 90 Street. The thief was unsuccessful so he or she spray painted the sign instead.
“These senseless thefts put all motorists at risk, “says Cpl. Steve PERRET, “drivers unfamiliar with
the area may drive right through an intersection without knowing they were supposed to stop.
Fortunately, there have been no accidents reported as a result of these childish acts”. Cpl. PERRET
would like to remind motorists to use caution when approaching all intersections. When approaching
an uncontrolled intersection (or what appears to be an uncontrolled intersection), slow down and yield
to motor vehicles on their right to avoid a collision.

The police are hoping that they will catch the thief of thieves before someone gets hurt. If anyone has
information regarding this rash of thefts, they are asked to contact the Fort St John RCMP at 250-
787-8100. If you wish to remain anonymous please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or via the
web at www.crimestoppersfsj.ca . They are open 24/7. You do not have to give your name, address,
or your telephone number. You do not have to testify in Court. A cash reward of up to $2000.00 will
be paid for any information which leads to an arrest and charge.
